David and Saul

1 Samuel 16:14-21
"But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him... Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him. Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep. And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul. And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer."

For this show I did two little series: four illustrations for the Bible, and six cloudmen portraits.

Illustrations for the Bible?

So this is because talking about the Bible is shocking in our day and age. I'm being controversial, just like a real artist. It seems to me that the French, and especially those my age, immediately and completely reject the Bible and anything that has to do with the Christian religion... and maybe rejecting a thing without thinking it over is just as dangerous as accepting it without thinking...

And because objectively, there are some great tales in the Bible: touching, funny stories that make me want to draw them, that I've always loved. Even if they've already been illustrated a billion times over, I find these illustrations to often be too syrupy or overembellished. I wanted to try my hand.

And finally, even if I don't really feel Christian anymore, I have a pretty positive memory of my childhood experiences in the Church community. From a historical perspective, I appreciate being able to understand the Biblical references that seem to come up everywhere. I like knowing these stories; I wouldn't want people to be opposed to them even before reading them. That's why I present them to you here.

This time, I've put an unfixed price on the drawings in the show. That means I invite people to decide for themselves the valor of a drawing, between 25 and 100 euros. It's an uncommon approach, but being an illustrator is an uncommon profession. I feel like I should explain myself.

Money can mean very different things depending on your lifestyle choices. I'd like it if everyone could allow himself a little artwork in their life, people who often buy art and also those who normally wouldn't spend money on something like that. In my own lifestyle, a very little amount of money can be very significant; but I'd like the price of a drawing to have more to do with the resources of the buyer. Galleries often take a commission, as is the case this time.

The price of a commercial object would normally have something to do with the time one spends making it. In the world of drawing, however, I don't think I could ever pay myself a fair hourly wage. I can spend a whole hour doing nothing but thinking about a drawing that I'll never end up making, or five hours making a frame for a drawing that deserves it. Sometimes, in brilliant moments, I spend the least time making the drawings that end up being the best. What's more, the ones I find the most beautiful aren't necessarily the
same as the favorites of other people.

I can clearly see the danger of saying to myself, as I draw, "this one's to be sold, it has to be pretty." Leaving the price open allows me to avoid this risk. So, I allow myself the freedom to not put a price on my drawings.

So, you decide. In any case, thanks very much for your interest.

And cloudmen portraits?

You know, all those faces you see in clouds, in rocks, in trees and in the knots and rings of wood... I painted their portraits. I wanted to keep them, all those funny shapes that we're lucky enough to glimpse. I wanted to immortalize them in spite of the ephemereal nature of their origins... and most of all, this project required me to always have a pencil and paper on me, and to keep watching the clouds.

Seeing all these bizarre characters stopped in time like this makes you want to keep playing the game of finding what their lives might be like:

   -Who's this mini-genius?

-He looks kind of dumb, too.

-No, that's just it, he's not dumb, he's super intelligent. He's a top scientist.

-But I'm sure he still lives with his mom.

-And he invents formulas and stuff and gets manipulated by all the big politicians.

-He gets manipulated by just about everybody, in fact.

  -Even his mom.

-Oh yeah, especially his mom.

-Must be her that made him get his portrait done even though it makes him really nervous.

-Poor guy, his hands must be all sticky.

And I kind of wanted to make fun of all those dark old portraits of people's ancestors that you see in the hallways of big cold houses. Excuse me if they really do resemble your ancestors; I didn't do it on purpose.

The faces I see in clouds are always masculine. You can interpret that however you like.

Until I was four, I wanted to be an astronaut. I'd been charmed by photos of guys drinking floating spheres of orange juice with a straw. But as soon as I was taught to read, I declared that my future profession would be author and illustrator of childrens' books. Later, I didn't dare announce it quite so loud; even so, the Grand Dream rests the same.

Once in a while I reopen the little books they read to me when I was a kid in Oregon. Some of them, with the efficiency of a flying carpet, can bring me back to that old life. When I see those little drawings again, I'm astonished that they exist for reals, that they haven't disappeared with the imaginings of my child world. I can still see them and feel them like before: on the back of my tongue there's the taste of magic.

Surely the clear lines and the bold colors in those books helped my young eyes and brain to develop their perception of the world. Maybe that's why I sometimes feel like I live inside a children's book. I'm surrounded by funny little stories. They make me want to tell them.

Later, in France, I was introduced to the world of the graphic novel, the 'bande dessinée." There I recognized the same tenderness, the same care for the beauty of the story that had never ceased to attract me to the kids' section of the library. If you manage to find graphic novels in the U.S.A. I come from, they're often dark and incomprehensible. In France it's another culture altogether: illustrated stories for small and big people, a media whose casualty permits it to approach even the most tender or bitter subjects. For a homesick drawing nut who hadn't quite mastered the French language yet, the world of graphic novels could open doors.

A few years ago, as I traveled in Sweden, I became enchanted by the drawings of a certain Joan Bauer. He had managed to capture the imagination of his people on paper: deep mossy forests, glowing children following trolls, animal companions and midnight voyages. His images set me daydreaming; maybe they reminded me of a subconscious aesthetic that had survived the generations since my ancestors left Sweden. Later I learned that the drawings were illustrations for actual stories; but when I read the tales I was disappointed. Just a bunch of blond princess heroines and predictable endings. I liked the foggy pieces of story I had imagined from the drawings much better than the actual folktales.

So this art show is an invitation to invent. Voilà scenes with no characters, silent characters, words with no image and images that offer no explanation. An homage to the stories invented by the bedside. A refuge for unsweet heroines and bad guys, who for me have always been the most fun to draw.

There. It's up to you to imagine the ending.

EXPOSITION à la LIBRAIRIE

For the whole month of May I get to hang my doodles on the walls of the kids' bookstore "A Titre d'Aile" in the Croix-Rousse. They don't take a commission if I sell any, but they do ask me to do two drawing workshops with kids. I finally got the images from the January expo at the Boulangerie du Prado online too! Look for them in the column at the right. Bon. voici l'expo...

The Animal Without Any Name

The Animal With No Name

drawings by julie lamberson and story by guillaume varet

1
In the middle of a prairie of wild grasses lived an animal with no name and no friends.

2
The animal with no name had no one to play with. No one to talk with. No one. No one. No one.

3
He had never met the other inhabitants of the wild grasses. That, in fact, was the reason he didn’t have any friends. And he was bored a lot. A whole lot. So he spent all his time sleeping in his little house.

4
The animal with no name didn’t get up until the sun was very high in the sky, and the heat stifled all signs of life. Silence reigned then over the prairie of wild grasses, because all the other inhabitants were taking their naps.

5
The birds took refuge in their nests in the shade of the leaves.

6
The insects hid under the grasses and let themselves be rocked by the wind.

7
The grass runners buried themselves deep in the ground, there where the heat hesitated to venture.

8
The prairie of wild grasses was full of drowsiness then and empty of friends for the animal with no name. And he believed himself to be alone.

9
One day, however, as he ventured his snout into the bright daytime sun, he discovered an enormous wooden box.

10
Observing it more closely, he saw a lock without any key. What could be inside?

11
The animal with no name pushed, pulled, bit, blew in the keyhole… but nothing worked, the box didn’t open.

12
Where could this box have come from, anyway? He looked all around him, trying to see if maybe a box tree hadn’t grown up during the night. But there wasn’t any new tree! Someone had put it there, then.

If there was a friend somewhere in the prairie of wild grasses, he wanted to meet them.

13
To find out if the box was empty, the animal with no name knocked softly on the wood.

And the box opened.

14
Inside the box, he found a drawing. And at the bottom of the drawing, someone had written:

WHO ARE YOU?

15
The heart of the animal with no name started to beat very fast. He didn’t feel like sleeping any more at all. He felt like answering his friend. But how to answer them?

Suddenly he had an idea.

16
He seized the drawing again and on the back he wrote, “I am an animal with no name.” Then he put the paper back in the box, and so as not to frighten his very first friend, he hid in the wild grasses.

17
The animal with no name waited a little. But the more he waited, the more he thought that he would like to know his friend’s name. He went back up to the box, knocked again and the box opened. But the drawing wasn’t there!

18
In its place, there were lots of little pebbles. The little pebbles formed letters, which in their turn formed words, which spelled out

“I’LL CALL YOU BAMASHA OF THE DAY”

19
Bamasha of the Day looked at the pebbles, looked at the grasses, looked at the clouds, and smiled. He said to himself “What a pretty name, ‘Bamasha of the Day’,” and he cried out as loud as he could

“Who are you?”

20
And the cry carried all across the prairie of wild grasses. The birds, the insects, the grass runners… they all woke up.

21
They all ran to the box to see who had shouted. And there, in the wild grasses, they discovered two new friends: Bamasha of the Day and Saloma of the Box.

22
These days, Bamasha of the Day doesn’t get bored anymore. He spends his time running in the grasses with his new friends.

He’s moved house, too: now he lives with Saloma in a box always open for anyone who wants to stop by…

EXPOSITION at the BOULANGERIE du PRADO

JANUARY 2007. Voici ma toute première exposition de peinture (avec à l'intérieur un peu de poésie mélangée) Because I like drawings that tell stories, And because when I was four years old, I said I wanted to make kids' books... And because I wanted to see how far drawing could take me, And because I missed my native English for the poetry of it... And also, because they believed in me... Here you have my very first painting exhibition (with a little poetry mixed in)
