« Ils étaient six frères dont le destin s’avérerait moyennement fabuleux. Chacun était plus affreux que le suivant. Ils passaient la plus belle partie de leur temps à trainer dans un bar dans les hauteurs de la ville. Ils avaient tout pour être heureux dans la vie : de la soupe avec des tartines, une programmation d'enfer, un jardin avec des coquelicots. Mais ces cinq-là ne faisaient que perturber le bon fonctionnement des lieux. Ils s'arrangeaient pour ne jamais payer leurs bières. Ils restaient des heures dans les toilettes et y cassaient toujours la craie. Jamais ils ne se lavaient les mains plein de bave avant de prendre des BD. Pour marquer leur page, ils pliaient les coins des tables.

« Un soir vers 20h45, alors que tout le monde attendait impatiemment le début du concert de cor alpine accompagné de banjo, ces voyous-là ont jugé que c'était le bon moment pour aller commander des bières au comptoir ! Ça a été un incident de trop. L’œil noir collectif les a transformés sur-le-champ en statues de bois un peu pourri. Et ils restent ainsi jusqu'à ce jour, comme vous pouvez le voir de vos propres yeux. »

During the January Pushpin Show at the Newport Visual Arts Center, a handful of the exhibiting artists are chosen to present a larger selection of their work for the Mayor's Show in February.  I was honored to participate this year!

My entry to the Pushpin Show this year...

For January every year, the main gallery at the Newport Visual Arts Center fills with the art of anyone who would like to participate.  Participants in the PushPin & ClothesLine Show must be able to hang their work "with four or fewer push pins or three or fewer clothes pins."

It was a real pleasure to create this 2nd film clip with the team from Hélio Films... especially during 2020 when working with others became even more precious. Commissioned, like the Patou clip, by the Bauges Regional Park and the Haute-Savoie Alpine Economic Society, this film gives a wider message about the history and importance of animal herding.

Bravo to Bérangère (director/screenwriter,) Yann (voice/screenwriter,) Laurent (animation,) and Thibaud (sound design)! Enjoy!

C'était un plaisir de créer ce deuxième clip d'animation avec l'équipe de Hélio Films ... surtout pendant l'année 2020 quand le travail en équipe devint d'autant plus précieux. Comme le film du Patou, ce film était une commande du Parc naturel régionale du massif des Bauges et des societés d'économie alpestre. Le film fait un point sur l'histoire de la pastoralisme et son importance.

Bravo à Bérangère (directrice, scénario,) Yann (voix-off, scénario,) Laurent (animation,) et Thibaud (son.) Bonne visionnage !

We are in Fontaine this year, with the fair city of Grenoble just over this bridge.

This drawing was done during a writing/drawing workshop proposed by the library.  It was a challenge!

200 years later, the Nye Beach sky is blood red, imprisoned by terrible grey clouds.  Here we encounter the great-great-grandchilden of our valiant explorers of the air who long ago used to straddle seagulls as they flew.  The ancestors' vehicle has been adapted: concrete protects the cockpit from radiation, supported by four supplemental wheels.  Wetsuits have been replaced by integral jumpsuits more adapted to the toxicity of the air.  They are posing in front of a painting of Nye Beach, replica of the 1920s.

On the back, an advertisement proposes vacations at Nye Beach for 5 bitcoins.  A child poses in the company of an alien come to visit the area.

Restoration of a historic painting (100 years or more?) over the fireplace of an old basalt Creusois house, before/after.

The symmetrical vases of flowers were reasonably visible but the central image impossible to make out.  At the homeowner's request, I painted two ladies spinning wool and tending a garden.

Egg tempera and natural pigments, as close to the original materials as I know how.

Master Anicet says: "The great problem with literary or poetic translation, which you will surely have to face, is that you'll have to smash up beautiful works of writing, betray them, damage the quality that made them shine in their original language."

Quelques heures après avoir publié ce caricature, son auteur ainsi qu'une douzaine d'autres dessinateurs et d'autres personnes ont été fusillés sur leur lieu de travail, parmi des cris de 'allah akbar.'  C'est un métier dangereux, mais quelqu'un doit le faire.

C'est difficile pour nous d'imaginer l'importance que la réligion peut avoir dans la vie de certains personnes.  Peut-être que l'on pourra mieux comprendre si on imagine quelque chose a la place qui nous est très cher, comme l'amour de la famille, des enfants.  Maintenant, imaginons que quelqu'un fusille 12 personnes en criant, 'ça, c'est pour amour pour ces enfants!'  Est-ce que cela ne serait pas plus blessant que quelqu'un qui dessine des caricatures de ces enfants avec des grands nez et oreilles, pour vous, le (moslim/chretien/juif) parent aimant?

I don't think I really love Guillaume more than before.  But when you're doing well, when you feel like you're making good use of your life, you love yourself more.  And love generates love, it's as though there was more of it available for other people too.  Guillaume mistakes my smiles for smooches.

Toute seule à la yourte ce soir. La lumière est jaune et bleu. J'entends la pluie qui a commencé à tomber dans les bois mais les nuages sont si immobiles au-dessus de moi que plusieurs minutes s'écoulent avant que je ne reçois une goutte.

I've been working full-time for the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Newport, OR since March, so I haven't been putting many drawings here for you to see!  But I have been sliding in some art projects at work.  Here they are:

Christmas 2014.  Alex, our brother-in-law, is back from San Francisco. "I was surprised how many crazy people there were in the streets," he said.  There was no more funding for asylums and social centers, so everyone who was deemed non-dangerous was 'let loose in the wild.' At least during the daytime.

Maybe it's good they are among us?  That they see us, that we see them?

"What does crazy mean?" Pauline asked.  No one could explain it simply.

"You're crazy, Dad," she said later in another conversation.

Waiting to leave is something like a small death.

We say goodbye to people we know.  'Hey, you're still here?' 'Yeah.' 'I thought you were already gone!  You'll let us know, right, so we can say goodbye?'

We bequeath our things, even the tools that allow us to do what we love to do. "Take care of them, okay?" "Wow great!"

We stopped buying and we try to use up our stock.

It makes me think about another departure, long ago- When I had to leave Chile and my brand new artist sweetheart. In the end, I pushed back the plane ticket, which led to my whole current life. I had written a poem: 'My canceled death day.'

J'adore voter en Oregon. Tous ces propositions de loi et candidats locaux me donnent l'impression que ma vote vaut quelque chose. Même d'ici.

Cette année j'ai voté pour le candidat des Verts, Jason Levin. Il est un peu bizarre pour être gouverneur de tout un Etat, mais au moins il a le bon sens d'une personne normale. Il n'a pas gagné, de toute façon.  Je suppose que nous avons Kitzhaber à nouveau.

It's funny.  This lady from the embassy must be French, but she speaks like an American.  Sort of freaked out, serious-sounding but not a very large vocabulary.  Normally the French administration is much more intimidating.

While I transcribe this message a little wren explores all the nooks of the interior of the yurt.

Here's this summer's art show, hung on the walls of the Gueret library from Aug.28 to Sept.8.

The show was during the Forêt Follies festival, so the theme is: "The Forest."  Fun!  Good thing I have lots of that around to take inspiration from.  It was also the biggest show I've ever done: 40 paintings!  I gave some Introduction to Watercolor workshops during the show, right there in the library during opening hours, which went great.  You always learn the most when you teach.  Lots of people said nice things about the paintings, and I sold some too (mostly to the librarians.)

Here's La Historia Para Despertar a los Ninos, translated, glorified, printed out and hand-bound for a contest I participated in in August.  The contest is called "Ouvrez, Ouvrez les Livres aux Bébés" and is put on every year by the head of the Department neighboring Creuse, the Puy-de-Dome.  I decided to skip self-publishing this time and try to get the book published for reals, so for now you can only read it here.  I haven't gotten around to sending it to any publishing houses yet-- too busy dabbling in oil paints...

Voilà Antiberceuse!  Je n'ai pas fait d'autoedition cette fois, je vais l'envoyer direct à des maisons d'édition... un jour... quand j'aurai un peu de temps entre peintures à l'huile.  Pour l'instant, vous ne pouvez le lire qu'ici.

Un des meilleurs trucs qui se trouvent à Lyon est ce mec qui fait des graphs de oiseaux dans les voies de train.  Puis je copie d'autres graphs.  Typique le genre de chose que tu veux dessiner un jour et tu te rends compte que tu ne sais pas du tout faire.  C'est comme copier la signature de quelqu'un.
